College of Science Internships
Facilitated Internship Program
The Facilitated Internship Program will not be run for the Fall 2020 semester.
We look forward to offering it again in future semesters. If you have any questions about the facilitated program, please email us at internships@csme.utah.edu
The College of Science Internship program operates each semester (Fall, Spring, Summer) and is administered by the Center for Science & Mathematics Education (CSME). This program connects employers with eligible University of Utah undergraduate student interns who have a declared major in one of the departments of the College of Science (biology, chemistry, mathematics, or physics & astronomy). Duration of internships may vary depending upon the employer’s needs, but all internships will begin at the start of the semester and generally last at least 10 weeks. Positions may be full or part-time, paid or unpaid. Although not required for participation, students may pursue credit through various departments on campus.
In order to participate, students must apply to the program during an application cycle. All qualified applicants who meet the basic academic criteria and minimum qualifications are passed to the employers, who then conduct additional screening to select a candidate.
Students who receive and accept an internship offer from a participating employer will participate in a career-readiness orientation at the University of Utah before their first day on the job. They will also participate in a final symposium at the end of the semester to report on the outcomes of their internship work.
The Facilitated Internship Program Includes:
The facilitated internship program includes assistance with the application process. The internship coordinator is available to assist with the application process including providing guidance on your resume and cover letter, helping you identify skills that align with your positions of interest, and offering technical help with the application. She will keep you updated on your application’s progress as it is submitted to potential host organizations and provide you with tips on interview success.
The University of Utah College of Science hosts an internship orientation each semester which includes information on professionalism, how to make the most of your internship, legal information regarding internships, university resources, and credit information.
Interns in the facilitated internship program receive ongoing support and facilitation throughout the entire semester. From check-ins, to tips, to reflection, this support and facilitation helps you make the most of your internship experience both during the process and afterwards.
The College of Science Internship Symposium allows students to present and reflect on their internship experience while improving their communication and presentation skills. The format may change from semester to semester based on the current safety guidelines and types of internship experiences, but will typically include a 5-minute presentation on the internship experience in front of an audience. The Fall 2020 symposium will be held virtually. Future symposiums are still TBD.
Facilitated Internship Program participants automatically receive a College of Science Internship Completion digital badge upon successful completion of the program and an honorary cord for convocation.
