Experienced Mathematics Educator
The University of Utah aspires to become a center for world-class scholarship in math and science education. Our long-term goal is to have education scholars embedded in each of the four departments in the College of Science. In the current phase of this multi-year strategic hiring initiative, we are seeking up to three new faculty members who could be appointed in Chemistry, Mathematics, and/or Physics & Astronomy; joint appointments are possible. The Department of Mathematics is seeking a well-established faculty member to provide vision and leadership for the Math Education Group, whose primary mission is to enhance math education for current and future K-12 teachers. The successful candidate will be appointed to the Mathematics Department and affiliated with the Center for Science and Mathematics Education. He/she will work with a collaborative team of education-focused scholars to advance two priorities: 1) improving and enhancing undergraduate education in math and science; and 2) increasing the number and/or improving the efficacy of K-12 math and science teachers.

We seek an accomplished scholar with a strong research background in mathematics and extensive experience leading educational programs, who is also committed to providing a world-class education for all our students. Candidates must have a doctorate in mathematics or closely related field, as well as a strong research record in pure or applied mathematics. The ideal candidate will also possess: 1) evidence of excellence in teaching at the undergraduate and/or graduate level; 2) a commitment to equity in math education; 3) experience developing and/or managing collaborative educational programs; and 4) excellent communication, organization, and leadership skills.
Recent University of Utah investments in science and mathematics education make this an exciting time to join our collaborative enterprise. Three early-career scholars in the College of Education have nucleated a strong research core to complement existing programmatic efforts across campus. The Crocker Science Center, a new integrated science facility, has catalyzed a number of education initiatives in the College of Science, including a college-wide Learning Assistant program, an integrated core science curriculum, a STEM transfer student program, a college-wide internship program, course-based undergraduate research experiences, etc. In addition, several cohort-based math and science teacher-education programs have been developed in recent years to improve teachers’ content knowledge and their ability to deploy evidence-based inclusive pedagogies. These investments occur against the backdrop of large enrollment increases at the University of Utah, resulting in a more diverse student body from a broader range of academic, geographic, socioeconomic, ethnic, and life-experience backgrounds. We seek colleagues committed to inclusive excellence who will make a lasting impact on math and science education at the University of Utah.

Applications will be evaluated by a Mathematics subcommittee, who will forward a list of finalists to a central Executive Committee with representatives from all College of Science departments as well as the College of Education. The Executive Committee will select interviewees and make hiring recommendations to the appropriate department(s) in the College of Science.
